White cypress (callitris columellaris or callitris glauca) is a uniquely Australian timber which is extraordinarily well suited to log homes. This indigenous softwood timber possesses an incredible natural resistance to termite and borer attack as well as such high durability that chemical treatments, needed to preserve most other timbers, are unnecessary. Cypress has very low shrinkage, approximately 2.5% radially, and has very fine surface checking which can be minimised by sealing while green to slow drying. We have found cypress to be extraordinarily stable for all our log work. The timber has a high density (ADD 680 kg/cubic meter) and has a hardness (6.5 kN ) exceeding most oak species.
Cypress is obtained from managed native forests, and is widely distributed in inland areas of Australia with moderate rainfall. Cypress is a richly patterned wood with a white sapwood and variegated browns in the heartwood along with frequently occurring knots. It has a very fine, even texture with a straight grain. Cypress has a very unique pine aroma which is quite persistent. Australian white cypress has become highly regarded in overseas markets as a feature timber, especially for flooring and wall panelling.
